Together: Resisting, Supporting, Healing On May 17th and every day, we fight for justice as a global issue, resisting, supporting and healing together. Gains made in the fight for LGBTQ2+ rights over the past few decades are fragile, and the work towards an inclusive and equitable future continues. Canada’s labour movement must be at the forefront of the fight to protect the rights of LGBTQ2+ communities. We cannot be strong as a labour movement unless we are strong in all our communities and in ourselves.

PSAC strongly encourages members to take part in Statistics Canada’s public consultation on gender identity and sexual orientation. This year, the agency plans to expand its data-gathering to include broader definitions of gender and sexual orientation to reflect a more diverse and representative Canada.

International Human Rights Day is a day to celebrate and recommit to advancing human rights here at home and globally.   Seventy-two years ago, on December 10, 1948, the United Nations adopted the Declaration of Human Rights. It was a revolutionary document for the times.

Today, we mourn trans, two-spirit, non-binary and gender non-conforming people who have lost their lives to transphobia. November 20th is Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR) which began in 1999 by trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a trans woman who was murdered in 1998. On this day, PSAC mourns the loss of those who were loving partners, parents, family members, friends and community members.

May 17th is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. The date of May 17th was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. Today, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) recommits itself to fighting against the oppression, discrimination and harassment faced by the LGBTQ2+ community.

The most recent results from the Public Service Employee Survey show that, despite some improvements over the years, significant barriers remain for marginalized groups. The annual survey, which asks questions about peoples’ experiences at work, provides a picture of the reality facing workers from diverse groups, and that picture is not always a rosy one.
