Pride month: Nia's story

Nia Gillies is a proud labour and trans activist and is the current PSAC B.C. Pride Co-ordinator. She is also the PSAC Vancouver Island Human Rights President and sits on the Canada Employment and Immigration Union (CEIU) component’s B.C. Human Rights Committee as the representative in the first gender non-conforming seat in the Federal Public Service.

Her union involvement began before she came out, but she witnessed her own activism soar after coming out. Before coming out, she was her local’s treasurer. She later became the first openly trans local president in the history of the union from 2017 to 2019.

Her trans activism includes advocating for trans rights around health care, housing, employment and the end to violence and discrimination toward the trans community. She describes herself as a happy go-lucky open transgender woman whose hobbies include shopping and heavy metal music.
