Help Statistics Canada improve data on LGBTQ2+ communities

PSAC strongly encourages members to take part in Statistics Canada’s public consultation on gender identity and sexual orientation.

This year, the agency plans to expand its data-gathering to include broader definitions of gender and sexual orientation to reflect a more diverse and representative Canada.

Census data is essential because this information is used to support administration, policy development, planning, and decision-making of governments at all levels. By engaging in Statistics Canada’s public consultation on gender identity and sexual orientation, members can provide feedback on the language used to describe members of LGBTQ2+ communities so that it is more respectful, accurate and reflects the lived experiences of LGBTQ2+ Canadians.

Following the consultation, Statistics Canada will include the new measure of gender and sexual orientation as part of their 2021 census questions.
