Au début de la pandémie, le passage soudain au télétravail a été un défi pour Nielene Chand. Son employeur, comme bien d’autres au gouvernement, s’est empressé de déployer des plateformes et des équipements informatiques pour permettre de travailler à distance. Nielene, qui est présidente de sa section locale à l’Agence du revenu du Canada, craignait de ne pas pouvoir garder le contact avec les membres qui avaient besoin de son aide.

The dawn of a new work era
For Nielene Chand, the sudden shift to remote work at the onset of the pandemic was challenging. Like much of government, her agency was scrambling to roll out platforms and computer equipment to allow for remote work. Nielene, who is president of her local at Canada Revenue Agency, also worried about staying in touch with members who needed her help.
A year later, things have changed. “We’ve adapted to new tools and we’re working as efficiently at home as when we were in the office,” she explained. “Everyone is motivated by a deep sense of service to the public.”

Canadians will never forget the horrible images of seniors suffering alone in private long-term care homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Of the more than 25,000 people who have died to date from the virus in Canada, nearly 70 per cent lived in long-term care facilities – and most of those were in private, for-profit care facilities, such as those owned by Revera, Inc.
