Organizing victory: PEI workers win first digital organizing certification

Workers at the University of Prince Edward Island recently set an important precedent after winning their union certification based on electronic membership cards in what may be the first instance in their province’s history.

PSAC was the first union to introduce e-cards in Canada in 2013. This win brings us closer to making electronic membership cards accessible to workers and union members in all Canadian labour jurisdictions.

"What a historic victory for these workers," says Chris Di Liberatore, Regional Executive Vice-President, Atlantic. "We know that technology can be used in positive ways to help organize workers that otherwise would be left without a union."

This victory is especially important for members working in remote or rural locations, as it means that workers won’t have to travel to sign a physical card. It also means that existing PSAC members in PEI can now use PSAC’s online membership card to become members in good standing.

Congratulations to members in PEI who worked hard to raise the bar not just for themselves and their coworkers, but also for workers across the country!
