Public Interest Commission supports fair wages for NPF members

The Public Interest Commission (PIC) reports for Canadian Forces base Trenton and Canadian Forces base Suffield have endorsed the wage pattern we have been fighting for — the same increases also secured by eight other Staff of the Non-Public Funds (SNPF) bargaining units earlier this year.

This includes salary increases of six per cent in 2022, 4.75% in 2023, and three percent in 2024 - the same improvements already achieved at Petwawa, Kingston, Ottawa, Montreal/Saint-Jean, Bagotville, Valcartier, Gagetown and Goose Bay.

This is independent confirmation that our members deserve the same fair treatment and working conditions across the country. Unfortunately, the employer has made it clear they will not adjust their position to reflect PIC’s clear recommendations. This also contradicts the Memorandum of Settlement (MOS) signed by both parties last year to help resolve the ongoing strike.

The PIC process exists to guide both sides towards a fair settlement. Ignoring these findings undermines that process and prolongs the bargaining process for workers.

Workers deserve better

While we welcome this important step and appreciate our members’ patience and solidarity, we call on the employer to respect the direction of multiple independent PIC panels and the commitments outlined in the Memorandum of Settlement. NPF members at Trenton and Suffield deserve no less.

We remain determined to reach a fair deal that recognizes the critical work our members do in supporting Canadian Forces communities. The federal government has recently committed to wage increases for Canadian Armed Forces members – a sign that it values strengthening working conditions for Canada’s military. But if the government truly wants to follow through on its commitment, it must fix the broken Non-Public Funds system and ensure the workers who keep our bases running are no longer underpaid and undervalued.
