Friends,
In 2023, workers and unions across this country saw a historic year. Hundreds of thousands of workers in every province and territory in Canada – and in every sector of the economy – stood up for their rights, challenging employers and governments to shake up the status quo.
We can take pride in the fact that our union played a leading role in this resurgence of workers' rights, exemplified by the largest general strike in 20 years against the federal government.
Our determination and commitment were fueled by years of wage inequity, a flawed pay system, and the government's failure to protect our earning power from inflation. Inspired by the successes of others, such as Ontario's education workers, we took bold action, and we won: wage increases that prevent workers from falling further behind, new and improved remote work language, better job security, and safer and more inclusive workplaces.
This was a pivotal strike that mobilized and empowered more than one hundred thousand members. We emerged a stronger union because now every employer that we sit across from at the bargaining table knows what we are capable of and that we will not back down until we achieve a good collective agreement.
But we must not rest. As we move into 2024, our challenge is to build on the momentum of 2023. We must rise to this challenge by working together in the struggle for better working conditions and real economic and social justice – not just for PSAC members, but for everyone.
Antisemitism, Islamophobia, anti-Black racism, gender-based violence and transphobia are all on the rise. We also must recognize the broader societal challenges that we face – economic hardships, rising costs, and the impact of climate change. We can’t afford to be complacent.
We are at an important crossroads. The road ahead is challenging, but it is also filled with opportunities. We are ready.
In 2024, we will continue to capitalize on our momentum by building solidarity and ensuring our union is a powerful force for positive change.
Together, we can – and we will – make a difference, because when union members work together, we win together.
In Solidarity,
Chris Aylward
PSAC national president
