Platform and Action Plan

A labour movement for the future

Our labour movement must be more inclusive and forward-thinking. We need to move to the offence by reaching out and engaging workers and building alliances with others who seek social and economic justice. Larry will work with others to:

  • Fight for human rights in the workplace and against all forms of racism, oppression and discrimination in our communities

  • Push for, and support, the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission

  • Increase diversity and inclusion in the Canadian Labour Congress and in all aspects of its work

  • Adopt new ways of working to respond to the changes in Canada’s labour force, the structure and nature of work, and to rebuild the power of the labour movement

Strength through organizing

Our labour movement must get even bigger and stronger in order to defend and advance the interests of workers. Larry will work with others to:

  • Train, support and encourage workers to take collective action to raise their standard of living and win equality

  • Strengthen inter-union work in communities by providing active support to local labour councils and federations of labour, and multi-union and across-sector campaigns.

  • Mount an effective, collaborative, all-out initiative to counter the de-unionization of the Canadian economy

  • Build meaningful solidarity between organized and unorganized workers

An economy that works for workers

The pandemic has changed the way we work and will have a long-lasting impact on Canada’s economy. The Canadian Labour Congress must mobilize to rebuild a green economy that redistributes wealth, creates good jobs, and meets the needs of all generations. Larry will work with others to win:

  • New programs including: a regulated long-term care system, accessible post-secondary education, a system of universal high-quality child care, and universal, publicly-funded prescription drug coverage

  • Increased funding of public services financed through fair taxation

  • Higher minimum labour standards including $15/minimum wage, paid sick leave for all, and an end to unpaid work through internships

  • Real EI reforms, including higher benefit levels and fair access

  • Measures to improve economic security and equality, including fair trade not free trade agreements, pay equity, employment equity, paid parental leave, full access to improved pension and benefit plans, and access to transition programs for workers impacted by new technologies

Safer, healthier workplaces

Canadian workplaces are still too dangerous, and new hazards have emerged as employers strive to reduce production costs and maximize their profits. Larry will work with others to:

  • Ensure health and safety standards and enforcement are strengthened and that all workers are fully protected

  • Address the problem of worsening and increased workplace violence

  • Continue and increase the CLC’s ground-breaking work to stop domestic violence against women at home and in the workplace
