Four Days of Contract Talks with the Mint

On June 22, 23, 29, and 30, our negotiating team met with management representatives to continue negotiations for a new collective agreement. As was the case in May, the parties’ proposals focused primarily on non- economic matters. We will be tabling wage and other economic proposals later in the process once we receive payroll data from the Employer.

Over the course of the four days we made progress in some areas, such as corrections to seniority lists, printing of the collective agreement and trial periods for promotions.

However, we are in dispute with the Mint in a number of critical areas.

In negotiations, the Mint is proposing to expand temporary employment, as well as the expansion of part-time and student employment. We have told the Mint that our objective in this round of bargaining is to limit precarious employment. Our Bargaining Team believes in as much full-time work as possible with maximum access to benefits and pension.

Our members have made it clear that enhanced work/life balance is a priority for this round of bargaining. We’ve made no progress on these issues with the Mint.

We have told the Mint that we are looking for more scheduling stability and more say in the hours we work. We are still waiting to get the scheduling information we have requested from the Mint.

Again – We have informed management that we are prepared to bargain, but we are interested in improving working conditions at the Mint. Not steps backwards.

We return to the bargaining table in August. If you have questions contact a member of our Negotiating Team: Chris Hobbs and Jason Lapointe (Ottawa) Joel Kowerko and Kelly Votto (Winnipeg). There will be regular updates as things progress.
