In July 2021, the federal government appointed a taskforce to review the Employment Equity Act (EEA) with a mandate to study the Act and consult with stakeholders, communities and Canadians on issues related to employment equity. The taskforce will develop recommendations to the Minister of Labour on how to modernize the EEA. Its final report is expected in early 2022.
The Act is a critical tool to eliminate discrimination and barriers faced by equity-seeking groups in federally regulated workplaces. It has not been reviewed for 20 years, and much has changed in our workplace and society since then.
PSAC welcomes the review and is preparing a submission to improve the Act to reflect the current reality faced by marginalized workers that have been, and continue to be, excluded or discriminated against in the workplace.
To prepare PSAC’s submission to the taskforce, we are undertaking internal consultations to gather input for proposed changes to the legislation.
We invite all PSAC members to complete this brief online survey. Information provided will be used for PSAC analysis and for our submission to the Employment Equity Act taskforce.
The deadline to complete the survey is September 9, 2021.
