International Day for the Eradication of Poverty – Dignity for All

October 17 is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Each year on this day, the Dignity for All campaign for a poverty free Canada, which is supported by PSAC’s Social Justice Fund, promotes the Chew on This! day of action to mobilize people from across Canada to call for an end to poverty. The campaign is calling on the Government of Canada to do what is legally and morally required to uphold and protect the rights of people experiencing poverty and other intersecting forms of systemic oppression in Canada.

We believe poverty is fundamentally a violation of people's rights and dignity. It is pervasive and systemic, but it is not inevitable.

We urge the government to

  • Fulfill the legal obligation to protect people’s rights to an adequate standard of living and end poverty in Canada by 2030.
  • Set specific targets to end poverty and improve measures of well-being and equity among communities experiencing systemic oppression.
  • Prioritize funding for strategies that reduce poverty and improve measures of well-being and equity among communities experiencing systemic oppression.

Take action

Taking action is where you come in. You can help build the pressure to eradicate poverty and inequity in Canada by writing to your MP, joining the e-Rally, and writing to local media.
