PSAC strongly denounces the Prime Minister’s dismissive response to concerns raised by members of Grassy Narrows and Wabaseemoong (Whitedog).
For decades, these communities have been seeking justice and action in response to the ongoing impacts of mercury contamination. They deserve to be treated with respect, not met with comments that suggest the government can simply wait them out.
There is nothing funny about Indigenous communities demanding that their rights be respected.
Reconciliation is not about symbolism or empty words. It means listening, showing respect, and taking action, especially when Indigenous communities have been forced to wait generations to be heard.
“Reconciliation means listening, showing respect, and taking meaningful action that reflects the lived realities of Indigenous communities. We are in full solidarity with Grassy Narrows and Wabaseemoong and support their ongoing fight for justice, dignity, and safe communities,” says PSAC National President Sharon DeSousa.
The Prime Minister must apologize for his words and actions. In the spirit of truth and reconciliation, PSAC also recommends that he visit Grassy Narrows and Wabaseemoong, and meet with, and listen to community members.
The federal government must always engage with these communities in good faith and commit to real, urgent action.
