11 years after the Rana Plaza factory collapse, Canada’s unions honour victims and continue demands to improve conditions for workers [4]

April 24, 2024, marks 11 years since the collapse of the Rana Plaza garment factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This terrible and avoidable tragedy killed more than 1,134 workers and injured more than 2,600, unveiling the horrific conditions of work for millions of workers in an unregulated industry, not only in Bangladesh but in dozens of other countries as well.

PSAC donates $15,000 to support emergency relief in Turkey and Syria  [12]

PSAC’s Social Justice Fund has donated $15,000 to Oxfam to support emergency relief in Turkey and Syria, following the February 6 earthquake — the worst to hit the region in nearly 100 years. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed more than 40,000 people, with the death count still climbing, and left millions more displaced without shelter from the freezing temperatures.

PSAC pledges support to Hurricane Fiona and Pakistan flood relief efforts [14]

As Atlantic Canada continues the long road to recovery in the wake of Hurricane Fiona, PSAC’s Social Justice Fund has pledged $25,000 to the Canadian Red Cross as part of the Hurricane Fiona in Canada Appeal to help communities rebuild. The Red Cross is working closely with local, provincial, and federal governments to get humanitarian assistance delivered to people in need as quickly as possible, and with Indigenous communities in the Atlantic to assess damage and needs moving forward.
