Union members that stick together, win together [1]

Over the next few weeks, we could be headed towards a national strike for more than 155,000 federal public service workers. As strike votes wrap up on April 7 for  Canada Revenue Agency members and April 11 for Treasury Board members, it’s important to know what that means for federal public service workers.

FB bargaining: Team raises student use and scheduling [2]

Using students to do the work of border service officers was a critical issue raised by our FB bargaining team when talks with Treasury Board/CBSA continued March 21-23. PSAC-CIU was particularly alarmed by remarks from CBSA President Erin O’Gorman who told a parliamentary committee, “I would say that our student BSOs become, to a large extent, our permanent workforce.”

PA PIC report: Recommendations a step forward but fall short of inflation  [3]

The Public Interest Commission (PIC) report for the PA and Common Issues tables offers a pathway to make gains for workers, but still falls short of PSAC’s demands to reach a fair contract that keeps up with the rising cost of living.

Negotiations set to resume with federal government as strike votes continue [4]

As strike votes continue for more than 120,000 federal public service workers across the country, PSAC and the federal government have agreed to resume negotiations with the assistance of a third-party mediator to reach a fair contract for workers. The Common Issues bargaining team will continue talks April 2-6, followed by the PA, SV, TC, EB teams April 11-14.

EB members: PIC report advances bargaining to next step [5]

PSAC has received the Public Interest Commission (PIC) report for the Education and Library Science (EB) group following hearings that wrapped up on December 13. Following the same pattern as the TC PIC report [6] and the SV PIC report [7], the report unfortunately does not provide clear recommendations other than a return to the bargaining table.

FB bargaining: Team discusses firearm and telework issues while employer pushes concessions  [8]

The new year brought new bargaining dates for our FB team as we returned to the table with Treasury Board/Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) from January 31 to February 2, picking up where we left off in December. With the last day of this bargaining session coinciding with the FB day of mobilization on Feb 2, the team was re-energized with support from members across the country.

SV group: PIC report gives little direction [7]

PSAC has received the Public Interest Commission (PIC) report affecting more than 10,000 members in the SV group. Hearings concluded in November and unfortunately, similar to the TC PIC report [9], the report provides no clear direction other than a recommendation that both parties return to the bargaining table.

FB bargaining: Show your support for the team on February 2  [11]

Have you ever felt stuck in a loop? Our FB bargaining team knows the feeling all too well. As mobilization ramps up for this round of bargaining, it's becoming increasingly clear that CBSA has little more to offer than a Groundhog Day-type scenario, with the same inconsiderate proposals and attitudes we've already seen countless times.

TC group: PIC report offers no guidance [6]

A Public Interest Commission (PIC) report has been issued for the TC group following the hearing held on December 9, 2022. Unfortunately, the report provides no substantive guidance aside from recommending that the bargaining team should continue to negotiate.

Treasury Board needs to return to the table with a better mandate  [14]

Recent public communications from Treasury Board have implied an imminent return to the bargaining table. While there have been some exploratory conversations with the employer and representatives of the Federal Public Sector Labour Relations and Employment Board (FPSLREB) about logistics in the event of a possible return to the bargaining table, there is no confirmed agreement to do so. PSAC agrees that in the event of a return to the bargaining table, a third-party mediator would be advisable.

Federal government files complaint to deny workers fair contract  [15]

The federal government’s move to file a bad faith bargaining complaint against PSAC is just another stalling tactic to deny workers a fair contract.
