As Atlantic Canada continues the long road to recovery in the wake of Hurricane Fiona, PSAC’s Social Justice Fund has pledged $25,000 to the Canadian Red Cross as part of the Hurricane Fiona in Canada Appeal to help communities rebuild. The Red Cross is working closely with local, provincial, and federal governments to get humanitarian assistance delivered to people in need as quickly as possible, and with Indigenous communities in the Atlantic to assess damage and needs moving forward.

October 17 is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Each year on this day, PSAC’s Social Justice Fund supports the Dignity for All campaign and promotes the Chew on This! day of action to mobilize people across Canada to call for an end to poverty.  Take action now

PSAC’s Social Justice Fund is allocating $20,000 to help with a major relief and reconstruction project led by the Confederation of Public and Private Sector Workers (CTSP) in Haiti, whose members were severely impacted by the catastrophic earthquake and tropical storm Grace in August.  About 800,000 people have been affected, and an estimated 650,000 people need emergency humanitarian assistance. Thousands of people are now homeless, and there is an urgent need for shelters, hindered by the amount of damage and the ongoing pandemic.

PSAC is calling on the Canadian government to press the United States into easing its embargo and sanctions on Cuba. The country is facing an unprecedented health and economic crisis following 62 years of U.S. sanctions and the outbreak of COVID-19.

PSAC Social Justice Fund, in collaboration with the Union of Northern Workers (UNW), is allocating $60,000 for emergency relief to support the residents of the flooded communities of Fort Simpson and Jean Marie River. PSAC North also announced a $10,000 donation to the fund.

COVID-19 has highlighted more than ever the importance of PSAC and the Social Justice Fund’s humanitarian efforts across the globe. The pandemic has revealed deep structural inequalities in our society: the proliferation of precarious work affecting youths, women and racialized workers; the lack of affordable housing and potable water in Indigenous communities andthe privatization and deterioration of eldercare, to name but a few.
