Unions in the Workplace

Unions help workers in their workplaces in a number of ways. Here are a few:

  • Provide workers with a grievance procedure and representation when they feel that they've been wronged
  • Level the power imbalance between management and employees in that unions must be consulted on changes in the workplace that affect terms and conditions of work and treatment of employees
  • Negotiate salaries and benefits for all members
  • Educate members on their rights in the workplace
  • Promote workplace health and safety
  • Champion human rights and equality issues
  • Participate in joint committees with employers to address workplace issues
