The new minister of Fisheries and Oceans was mandated by the Prime Minister to re-open the Kitsilano Coast Guard station and the Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre in St. John’s.

BC’s fishing, tug boat and pleasure boat community are protesting the government’s decision to shut down the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station in Vancouver, meaning calls for help from Vancouver harbour now go to the Sea Island Station in Richmond, 17 nautical miles and 35 minutes away. A July 2012 report by the Maritime Coordinators of the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Victoria says the closure will put lives at risk.

Cuts to Fisheries and Oceans in British Columbia have left the department with half the habitat staff it had a decade ago. Among the fisheries habitat offices closing are those in Prince George and Smithers that would have taken the lead in assessing the Northern Gateway pipeline’s impact on fish habitats. Retired fisheries department scientist Otto Langer told CBC the government is playing a “cruel hoax” on the public when it comes to decisions about the pipeline.
