Ontario and Manitoba have had to step in to save a facility internationally reknowned for research into how human activity impacts freshwater systems, including things like phosphates, acid rain, climate change and fish farming. Established in 1968 and run by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Experimental Lakes Area in northwestern Ontario was threatened when the federal government announced in 2012 that it was cutting all funding.
