Purpose of position: 

 

As a result of the PSAC Workforce and Availability Analysis and in accordance with the PSAC Employment Equity Plan, the successful candidate for this appointment will be a qualified Indigenous or qualified racially visible person.

 

 

 

Reporting to the National President, the Political Assistant provides analysis, advice and recommendations to the National President, Alliance Executive Committee, National Board of Directors and other leaders and leadership bodies on a variety of issues including those related to national economic, social, political and labour policy, and on issues related to PSAC’s objectives, policies, programs and strategies. In addition, the political assistant leads and coordinates projects and areas of union and broader social justice work (domestic and international), as assigned by the National President.

 

Qualifications: 

 

Education:

  • University degree in political science, public relations, labour studies or communications or in a related field plus experience within a trade union.

Experience:

  • Experience and high degree of skills working in internal union policy development as well as positions related to social economic issues, advocacy and campaigns, project management and coordination;
  • Experience in working with elected union leadership, and providing leadership within union staff structures;
  • Experience in uprooting and addressing systemic institutional racism and colonialism, advancing intersectional gender-based equity, and applying an equity lens to all union work and policies;
  • Experience with collective bargaining and representation of workers;
  • Experience in strategic planning and brining about organizational change;
  • Experience in union communications (internal and external);

Knowledge:

  • Strong knowledge of PSAC and the labour movement in Canada and internationally;
  • Thorough knowledge of intersectional equity principles, including comprehensive knowledge of current and emerging Indigenous, racial and oppression prevention issues;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of labour laws, human rights, collective bargaining, representation, health and safety, pensions, gender equity and other worker and union challenges;
  • Good understanding of Canada’s economy, political climate and government structures and procedures;
  • Knowledge of the political and operational inter-relationship within a large national union.

Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate in writing and orally to a diverse audience, internal and external to PSAC;
  • Ability to think and act strategically to critically analyse issues and situations, evaluate and learn from experiences, share critical thinking and analysis with others and make sound-decisions;
  • Ability to negotiate and obtain commitment and action from others via persuasion and influence;
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently with limited direction, confidentially and exercise discretion;
  • Ability to work as well cooperatively in a team environment and exercise high-level judgment;
  • Ability to facilitate arriving at cooperative and innovative solutions to complex problems;
  • Ability to manage multiple issues concurrently, to respond calmly and effectively to a variety of demands and projects;
  • Demonstrate tact and discretion in handling confidential, controversial and sensitive information;
  • Second language skills as per the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level indicated above.
