Purpose of Position

Under the general direction of the Executive Director, the primary function of this position is to provide strategic leadership for all aspects of Human Rights with the goals and objectives of the PSAC. This position leads PSAC in fostering an environment where conflict is resolved through dialogue and discussion and in which individual differences are respected and discrimination, racism and oppression are not tolerated.

The Coordinator works primarily with the Executive Director, the director responsible for Human Resources  as well as the PSAC leadership, management, staff and unions to put in place mechanisms that will result in a change of the organizational culture into a more inclusive work environment.  The Coordinator is required to plan, organize and direct all activities in this area, including overseeing the development and the implementation of strategies, policies, processes and training to build organizational capacity to respond to incidents and to develop awareness and understanding of conflict management and human rights issues. This position assists the organization in creating and maintaining an oppression-free working environment by making assessments, providing recommendations and implementing them.

 

Qualifications:

Education and professional qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in law, conflict management, industrial psychology or degree in another appropriate field with ten or more years of current related experience
  • Certification in conflict resolution, mediation and/or coaching is preferred

Experience:

  • Ten (10) years of current related experience. Related experience is defined as:
  • Extensive experience and high degree of skills working in the area of conflict resolution including conducting investigations preferably in a unionized workplace
  • Experience in the area of human rights law and respectful workplace issues including discrimination and oppression issues
  • Experience in organizational change and
  • Development of policies, procedures and practices related to human rights
  • Experience in developing and facilitating training
  • Experience in providing coaching support
  • Experience with political organizations (candidates who do not meet that criteria will need to demonstrate they have knowledge and understanding of trade union principles and processes – see knowledge section)

Knowledge:

  • Strong knowledge of oppression, race analysis, conflicting rights and intersectionality
  • Knowledge of implementation of the requirements of procedural fairness
  • Excellent knowledge of applicable legislation related to human rights and workplace health and safety
  • In-depth knowledge of conflict management principles and coaching processes
  • Knowledge and understanding of trade union principles and processes (this will be assessed for candidates who do not have experience with political organizations)
  • Knowledge of the political and operational inter-relationship within a large national union organization
