International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Together we are stronger: Human rights for all

March 21 is International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. To mark this important day, PSAC is distributing a poster and backgrounder to our members in all regions.

Ongoing discrimination

This poster is very relevant today, as different incidents across the country show us - from requirements for citizenship, to Muslim women who are targets of verbal abuse and harassment in public, to a woman being denied access to the courts for wearing a hijab.

Muslim women are often the target of harassment and discrimination in the workplace. They also face high levels of unemployment and poverty. In 2011, the unemployment rate for Muslim women in Canada was 16.7 percent, more than double the national average for all Canadian women. In 2010, the median income of Muslim women was only $15,763, one-third less than average for all Canadian women.

Together we are stronger!

PSAC fights to defend the human rights of our members, in particular their right to non-discrimination and equality. This March 21, let’s show our commitment to the equality of women and racialized people by standing together against intolerance and discrimination.

Please share this poster and backgrounder and post in your workplaces, and feel free to join the conversation on social media using the hashtag #FightRacism (as part of the United Nations' international campaign) on Twitter and Facebook.
