The Liberal government has announced they are backtracking on their promise to make Canadian elections fairer and more representative.
“Our present system gives us majority governments with a minority of votes,” said PSAC National President Robyn Benson. “We need an electoral system that is more democratic, where everyone’s vote is equal and effective.”
PSAC joins the Canadian Labour Congress in calling on the Prime Minister to honour his campaign promise to make 2015 the last time there is unfair election.
“The Prime Minister needs to keep his word and make every vote count,” said Benson.
The government’s decision to abandon this promise follows months of consultations held by a special House of Commons committee and individual Members of Parliament. The committee recommended the government conduct a referendum on changing to a more democratic system of proportional representation.
