Purpose of position: 

Under the general direction of the Director of the Membership Programs Branch, and as a member of the Management Team, the Coordinator is responsible to lead the development, the coordination, the implementation and the evaluation of PSAC communications, political action and campaign strategies. Responsibilities include overall management, control and administration of the section and also leading a team of section staff. The coordinator works in cooperation with other sections and regions.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • A combination of education and experience in the field of communications, political action and campaigns in a national social advocacy or labour organization, including media relations, political action and communication strategies.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the PSAC, its objectives, programs and political and operational inter-relationships;
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Parliamentary and federal political systems.

Abilities:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English and in French;
  • Strong understanding of information communications technology, media relations, publications and other communications and campaign mediums and their purpose in a strategy;
  • Demonstrated management skills including ability to plan and set priorities;
  • Ability to successfully respond to and lead organizational change in an evolving environment and to effectively manage organizational, operational and people issues;
  • Strong understanding of creative processes, project management, production procedure;
  • Ability to understand and analyze a variety of leading edge economic, social, political and labour issues;
  • Ability to establish trust and cooperation amongst staff and promote enthusiasm and commitment, self-confidence, action-oriented, tenacity, good judgment and diplomacy;
  • Understanding and commitment to trade union and equity principles;
  • Ability to provide the PSAC leadership with sound counsel on matters relating to communications, political action and campaigns;
  • Strong time-management skills to deal effectively with conflicting priorities and time-sensitive issues while remaining focused in the face of multiple distractions, political acuity and strong membership services orientation;
  • Ability to understand and respond strategically to issues with innovative solutions and develop and monitor long and short term goals.
