UPCE Local 80823 sent a message of support to their bargaining team and against concessions on job security, one of the main issues in negotiations with Canada Post. “We support our negotiating team!” the letter says. “Job security is important to us. Hollow recognition The event is supposed to mark the importance of federal public service employees and to recognize their service to Canadians. Yet thousands of public service workers are still having financial troubles because of the Phoenix pay system.

The latest update on Phoenix, shows a large remaining backlog of cases. Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) provided the latest information on the public service pay system in a media teleconference on June 2. “We are not surprised,” said Robyn Benson, PSAC National President. “It’s been almost 18 months since the government launched Phoenix and it feels like we are nowhere near the end of this mess.”

The Federal Court of Appeal has dismissed a Treasury Board request for a judicial review of an adjudication decision that ruled certain employees were entitled to salary protection after being classified downwards.

Our bargaining team met with Canada Post Corporation on May 16 and 17, 2017. We had asked the employer to provide us with detailed information about their efforts to resolve existing surplus situations. The employer provided some of this information this week and committed to provide the balance of the information at our next meeting for our review and analysis. We continue to ask you to give us feedback on the employer’s proposal to change our current job security provisions.

At the request of the employer, the SSO bargaining session scheduled from June 13 to 15, 2017, has been cancelled due to changes on the employer’s bargaining team.

Our bargaining team met with SSO during the week of May 1. The team started the week in caucus, where we had planned to review SSO’s proposals, but unfortunately the documents provided by our employer contained many errors and lacked clarity.

After pressure from PSAC, the government agreed to compensate federal public service employees, with tax problems caused by the Phoenix pay system, for up to $200 per year of tax advisory services. The claim and release form is strictly restricted to tax advisory services for the tax years 2016 and 2017.
